 The Now Word 66

Blessings or Life?, by Schalk Meintjes

About a month ago I had a dream in which I went to the dentist. Meditating on this dream I sensed that God was showing me why I was not released to send out a letter in three months. God was working on my ability to chew His Word. He was going to reveal stuff to me, but my spiritual teeth needed to be strengthened and fixed to handle what He was going to give me.

Now, what I am about to share with you may sound strange in the beginning but ask the Holy Spirit to in part in you what He wants to. Like and old friend of mine said:” Chew the meet but throw out the bones.”

Yesterday morning I got the answer that I waited three months for. But, before I can tell you what the question was or share the answer, I need to explain the reason for me asking this question.

It started when I read the following scriptures.

  Genesis 2:9 Amplified Bible (AMP)
9 And out of the ground the Lord God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight or to be desired—good (suitable, pleasant) for food; the tree of life also in the center of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of [the difference between] good and evil and blessing and calamity.

Then you read further in the following scripture.
Genesis 2:17 Amplified Bible (AMP)
17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and blessing and calamity you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.

What popped out of these scriptures, what confused me was that the fruit blessing, was hanging on the “wrong” tree. In my previous writings I have written about the two trees that are described in Genesis 2. I understand clearly that good and evil hangs on the same tree, and as Christians we know that we do not get saved by good deed, but we are saved by faith. God also clearly said that Adam and Eve must not eat from this tree.

But what confused me was that blessings are also hanging on the tree with calamity (Calamity means: A great misfortune or disaster, misery, adversity, a serious injury. In short bad stuff)

Just like good has it's evil blessings has its calamity caused by a curse. Let me try and explain this some other way. If you do good you will eat blessings and if you do bad you will eat calamity. Can you see why blessings hang on the same tree as evil?

Many times in my live I would hear people say that they are blessed. I myself see myself as some one that is blessed. But for me to be blessed, someone has to be cursed. Let’s say I am blessed with money. I now say look how God has blessed me with all this money. If all of us had money none of us would be blessed, because for some one to recognise the blessing, they need to compare themselves with some one and by that you can determine whether you are blessed. If a lady says that they are blessed because they have a child, what is a woman that does not have a child? Many of the times people say that God has blessed them it’s because they got something that some one else did not get. Let take a job. If you are blessed because you got the job, many other people that have applied for the same job are not blessed with that job. If I get the parking in front of a shop, I see myself as blessed, but the person behind me is not blessed because they did not get the parking space. Ok, I hope you understand my thought process.

Take some time to digest this… And from the beginning God did not want us to eat from this tree. He did not want us to have the knowledge of what a blessing is, nor a curse, nor good, nor evil. And yet so many preachers and people focus on this.

This to me was a huge struggle. Because surely God wants good for us, surely He wants us to have a blessed life and for it to be a blessing?

When you look at the two trees you will see that the tree of knowledge of good and evil is the law and the tree of Live points to Jesus.

If you can see this you will then recognise that blessings are connected to the law. Let me show you what I mean. Here are some scriptures that show how God connects blessings to curses in the Old Testament.
Deuteronomy 11:26-28 Amplified Bible (AMP)
26 Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse—
27 The blessing if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you this day;
28 And the curse if you will not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way which I command you this day to go after other gods, which you have not known.

Can you see how God connects blessing to a curse and good to blessings and evil to curse? Does this not shock you to realise that God curses people who do not obey the law His commandments? If you read the New Testament you will actually see that God curses the people who live by the law, people who eat from the tree of Knowledge of good and evil, blessings and calamity. He actually says that the law will bring death.

Friend in Jesus. This is where we need to understand that blessings are part of the old covenant and not part of the new covenant. Let me write this again. Blessings are part of the old covenant and not the new covenant. Blessings are part of the law.

Throughout the Old Testament we find numerous occasions where God through profits teach us that if we do certain things we will be blessed. Take the Feast. Tonight is the Feats of Trumpets.

  Deuteronomy 14:29 Amplified Bible (AMP)
29 And the Levite [because he has no part or inheritance with you] and the stranger or temporary resident, and the fatherless and the widow who are in your towns shall come and eat and be satisfied, so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands that you do.

There are so many things, even tithing that has a promise of a blessing if you pay a tenth to “God”, or have a feast or whatever. Any deed that has a promise of a blessing or a curse is Old Covenant.

  Zechariah 14:17-18 Amplified Bible (AMP)
17 And it shall be that whoso of the families of the earth shall not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, upon them there shall be no rain.
18 And if the family of Egypt does not go up to Jerusalem and present themselves, upon them there shall be no rain, but there shall be the plague with which the Lord will smite the nations that go not up to keep the Feast of Tabernacles.

Can you see that if you do not go up to Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles (verse 16) you have calamity upon you, but if you go, you will be blessed.

Now surely this cannot be true for the new covenant? Surely we do not fall under the curse if we don’t go to Jerusalem?

This brings me to the question. What is it that God has in store for us? If blessings are on the same tree as evil and calamity and thus connected to the law, and if the other side of blessings are calamity and if I need to do good stuff to receive blessings then do I want to be blessed?

You can imagine how frustrating this was. How I was lost in this and could not find the answer to my question about blessings. If not blessings, then what does God want to give us?

And like so many things the answer was staring me in the face. Look to the other tree. The tree of Life.

Gods intend for us was never blessings but a joyful Life in abundance.

  John 10:10 Amplified Bible (AMP)
10 The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows).

  John 14:6 Amplified Bible (AMP)
6 Jesus said to him, I am the Way and the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father except by (through) Me.

WOW, to enjoy life and have it in abundance.

You see dear friend in Jesus. It’s about life. It’s about a joyful abundant life. It’s not a struggle against a curse, its not understand how we can be blessed. It’s knowing that Jesus has given us life. It is a knowing, that in Him there is a joyful life in abundance. I think we get so consumed with what is good and what is evil. We get consumed by what curses us and what blesses us, that we forget to enjoy the abundant life. Founded and routed in Jesus.

Walking habitually in Jesus is not about getting caught up in what is right and wrong. It’s about walking intimately sharing your abundant life with Him.

What is the difference between abundant life and a blessed life? It’s this… a blessed life is earned and an abundant life is given by the grace of God.

You may look at both and they may look the same. There are laws that if you keep them you will become wealthy. You will have a successful marriage and have a long life. But laws are from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, blessings and calamity.

The chances are 100% that if you are guided and controlled by the Holy Sprit that you will abide by these laws, un-knowingly. But can you hear the difference… Un-knowingly.

The glory for your abundant life will either go to God or it will go to the person maintaining the laws.

Today I urge you to seek a joyful Life and search it abundantly.

Dear Jesus. I truly love You. You have given me this huge gift. The gift of abundant life. I worship You and love You for this. I thank You for this gift of a joyful abundant life and my prayers are that Your name will be glorified in my abundance. In Your name I pray. Amen.
